Star Wars Day: A Marketing Win

Star Wars Day: A Marketing Win

History of Star Wars Day

Star Wars Day was not created by Lucasfilm, but was actually born from the famous pun, “May the 4th Be With You,” which dates back to 1979 when Margaret Thatcher became Britain’s first woman Prime Minister. On May 4th, 1979, Margaret’s party took out an ad in the London Evening News that said, “May the Fourth be with you, Maggie. Congratulations.” From there, the popularity of the phrase and pseudo-holiday took off with the help of the internet and the love Star Wars fans have for the franchise.

How Do You Celebrate?

Fans from all over the galaxy celebrate Star Wars Day differently. In 2015, Astronauts in the International Space Station held an outer space screening of Star Wars. Some simple ways to celebrate the 4th right here on earth include buying merchandise, dressing in costume, and sharing memes on social media. More hardcore fans have gone as far as hosting their wedding date on May 4th. The fun isn’t just for the fans, either. Companies have joined in on the festivities with their own renditions. Some offer discounts on Star Wars themed products. Participation in pop-culture trends brings companies and their brand closer to the audience they want to reach by being silly rathar than “salesy”. What Makes Star Wars Day Amazing?

At the risk of sounding cliche, the answer is simply the fans, of course! Star Wars Day is arguably the most amazing holiday on the calendar because it is completely fan made. Other holidays are created from old folklore, history, or to show appreciation for cultural tradition. This holiday lives on year after year because the die-hard fans of Star Wars will not let it fade away. #StarWarsDay breaks up the monotony of the week and adds fun for everyone.
